Typology:
A Media Arts Centre is a built environment designed for exploring the intersection of handcraft and digital-based art. This typology explores many facets of art, including education and preservation, physical production, advanced digital creation, performance and rehearsal, exhibition and installations, and much more.

Studio Inquiries:
• What is the cultural significance of contemporary media arts centres?
• How does this typology continue to embrace hand-making and past production methods?
• How can we create a meaningful architectural response to the arts community’s needs and the diverse demographic it encompasses?
• What role does digital technology play in the field of contemporary media art?
• What architectural interventions can develop an inclusive design that also offers flexible, modular, and multi-function spaces?
• What role does lighting and materiality play in constructing a user-driven experience that responds to current and future needs?

Approach:
Viractual was an interior design remote studio that required 21 ED4 students to retrofit a two/three-floor Media Arts Centre at the unoccupied 310 Ross Avenue building, located in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. Intensive site analysis, precedent studies, visual collages, and other investigations influenced the student’s preliminary research. Concept ideation required students to develop a mixed media installation/object that intersected digital and handmaking elements. The resultant installation/object would serve as the conceptual framework for their design ideation. The programme, concept, primary demographics, and materials vary based on each student’s design concepts and research. Projects produced in the studio explore many unique ideas; Many projects focus on performative and rehearsal spaces, while others investigate the field of hand-making and advanced technological environments.

Fusion Digital Arts Centre

I am an international student and I have just completed my undergraduate degree in Environmental Design Interior Environments option. I am interested in Historic buildings and adaptive reuse of buildings. Planning on working for a while before returning for my masters.

The Fusion Arts Center is a space that is intended to facilitate creation and learning in the digital arts center as well as allow for the interaction of the public with digital arts creations. The space allows for both the creation and installations with V/R and A/R exhibitions, a silk pavilion that explores light projection on naturally spun silk and a gallery for AI generated art. The center is also embraces the growing space of digital content creation with a video content creation studio as well as a full music recording studio.

Institute of Media Arts

The institute of Media Arts is an educational facility that embraces a wide range of learning opportunities for all ages and diversities. The design is composed of a variety of different spaces that support independent and collaborative learning styles. These spaces are connected by a several open communal areas that encourage interaction amongst guests and students. Overall, the building contains a warm and welcoming atmosphere as the design aims to maximize natural light using glass partitions and transparent materials.

SQUARIX Media Arts

The SQUARIX Media Arts offers spaces for artists to explore their artistic abilities by offering independent and collaborative studios for sculpting, printmaking, woodworking, and more. It takes on a futuristic design style filled with plenty of square, linear elements to emphasize the idea of pixels converging to make a whole.

310 Ross Avenue is a facility that incorporates both digital and analogue technologies (Projector installation, virtual reality experience, and 3D visualizers). This building is open to visitors who wish to examine unique visual experiences, as well as young children who want to experience the beauty of art with their eyes and hands. To maximize the interaction experience between new technology’s illusion and reality, the design style should be consistent with the design concept provided in A2, which includes the use of massive high gloss materials and LED panels. The design style will be futuristic, modernism, with horizontal and vertical design elements as well as organic shapes incorporated.
